Antique Painting Mediterranean Port Scene Oil On Canvas XVIII Century
Oil on canvas. Central European School, 18th century. The dinner frames the entrance to a port overlooked by a fortress, toward which several vessels are sailing. On the dock in the foreground is a group of figures, several of whom are dressed in oriental garb, thus placing the port in a southern location, likely overlooking the Mediterranean. The work is part of the European artistic production that indulged the taste for oriental subjects or, at least, southern hemisphere locations; an example of this style is Ignaz Franz Joseph Flurer (1688–1742), an Austrian painter who created works very similar to this one. The painting has been restored and relined in the past. It is presented in a period frame.
