Artist biography:
Jean Julien was a student of Fernand Cormon at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris. A regular exhibitor at the Salon des artistes français, and a friend of Marcel Pagnol, Fernandel, Raimu and Tino Rossi, Guy Dornand called him "Provence's ambassador to Paris". Between the wars, he traveled to Italy and North Africa, and designed tourism posters, murals and theater sets, all the while remaining faithful to his hometown. With his colleague Auguste Durand-Rosé, he is a member of the Association des Marseillais de Paris. The decorative works that Jean Julien signed in 1933 in Paris for the rue Saint-Martin school resulted from the adoption of his project, following the proposal by Emmanuel Pontremoli, director of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, of several names of artists qualified to compete for the project, including, in addition to Jean Julien, Clément Serveau and Hugues de Beaumont. He taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was professor of drawing at the Ecole Polytechnique. He is represented in numerous public collections: Arles Musée Réattu, Marseille Musée des Beaux-arts Musée Cantini, Paris Assemblée Nationale and Petit Palais.
