Still Life With Bottles And Flasks - Jorge Maragall, 1977
Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard depicting a composition of bottles and flasks, where the simplicity of the everyday subject becomes a pretext for vibrant, expressive pictorial research. The work is signed and dated 1977 by Catalan painter Jorge (Jordi) Maragall.
From a prominent Catalan intellectual family - son of politician Jordi Maragall i Noble and grandson of poet Joan Maragall i Gorina - Jorge Maragall nevertheless developed a deeply intimate body of work, nourished by introspection and great creative freedom. Trained in Ramon Rogent's studio, by the end of the 1950s he had developed a personal pictorial language, in which expressionism dialogues with a rigorous construction of form. His universe bears the imprint of masters such as Henri Matisse, Georges Rouault, Edvard Munch, Oskar Kokoschka, Giorgio Morandi and Fernand Léger.
In this still life, the artist reveals the full force of his gesture: assertive contours, chromatic tension and lively matter animate the most modest objects. True to his work, Maragall here transforms the everyday into a composition inhabited by energy and silent poetry.
