Terracotta Oil Bowl, Tuscany, Late 19th Century.

Large terracotta oil basin, Tuscany, late 19th century. The wide, flared shape, with a pronounced rim and sides decorated with a raised, repeating wave pattern, is a genuine example of the rural Tuscan tradition associated with olive oil production.

These containers were used for the initial decanting of freshly extracted oil: the oil was collected in the basin and left to rest in a cool place; once the sediment settled to the bottom, the clear, clean portion was transferred to the final storage jars. The heavy lid, originally made of wood or iron, protected the contents from light, dust, and insects.

Used in Tuscan oil mills and sharecropping farms until the early decades of the 20th century, these basins retain all the charm of traditional rural craftsmanship.

Available in various sizes and also as a pair, ideal as decorative elements for interiors, gardens, courtyards, or spaces with a rustic and authentic style.

In good overall condition, with signs of wear consistent with use and age.
