"Fire in a port near Naples", this striking painting, was executed at the end of the 18th century. Its style, composition and date of creation being perfectly identical, it has been attributed to the French painter Pierre-Jacques Volaire (1729-c. 1802), known as the Cavalier Volaire.

For comparison, see several similar works by Volaire.

This French landscape painter is famous for his dramatic depictions of the eruption of Vesuvius and Neapolitan coastal landscapes, often embellished with scenes of fire. He lived and worked for many years in Naples, where his masterful use of light and shadow in his canvases was much appreciated.

Volaire is particularly famous for his many paintings depicting Vesuvius at night, often with lava flows and spectators. Style: His works combine elements of veduta painting with the dramatic style of the late Baroque and the beginnings of Romanticism.

Training: Born in Toulon, he was a pupil of Joseph Vernet.

Career: After his stay in France, he settled in Italy, where he practiced under the name "Il Cavalier Volaire". His works regularly feature in prestigious auctions, where they fetch high prices.
