Auguste Cain
Artist: Auguste Nicolas Cain 1821-1894
Dead woodcock in bronze with brown patina on a griotte red and black marble base, 19th century, after Auguste Nicolas Cain (1821-1894), a famous French animal sculptor who was a pupil of Antoine Louis Barye and Pierre Jules Mène, and exhibited at the Salon where he won several medals. The quality of his work earned him numerous commissions, notably from the public sector. His works can be admired in numerous museums in France (Louvre, Orsay) and abroad, and some are still preserved in the places for which they were created, such as the Château de Chantilly and the Tuileries gardens.
