Liquor Cabinet Attributed To Jean-pierre-alexandre Tahan (1813–1892)

Artist: Jean-pierre-alexandre Tahan (1813 - 1892)

The son of a cabinetmaker, Jean-Pierre Tahan took over and expanded his father's workshop in 1844, eventually becoming one of the most renowned names in Paris. Appointed cabinetmaker to Napoleon III, he produced exquisite small pieces of furniture for the court and the upper middle class, featuring lines emblematic of the Second Empire style, as well as caskets, boxes, and liquor cabinets, such as the one presented here. The fall of the emperor foreshadowed his own; his close ties to the regime were frowned upon, and his clientele dwindled. In 1882, he closed his workshop.

This liquor cabinet showcases Tahan's classic style: precious woods worked in various veneers, and details reminiscent of Boulle. The sixteen (16) glasses and four (4) decanters are Baccarat crystal, adorned with a gold rim or vine motif. The set is in very good condition.
