Giancarlo Cori – “After the Flood,” 1968
Oil on canvas
(50 × 70 cm; framed 91 × 71 cm)
An intense and highly evocative work, signed and dated “Cori 68” in the lower left corner, with an additional inscription on the reverse reading “Cori 68 After the Flood,” confirming the title and date. The painting is situated within the expressive climate of the second half of the 20th century, in which the human figure becomes a vehicle for existential and social reflection.
The composition is dominated by an isolated male figure, depicted in full face, suspended in an undefined and vibrant space, constructed through an intense and textural chromatic background in shades of ochre and gold. The figure, dressed in shabby clothes and marked by his facial features, appears almost worn out, as if emerging from a state of distress and precariousness. The face, barely defined and almost eroded, accentuates the sense of alienation and loss of identity.
The brushwork is dense and layered, with a pictorial surface rich in ripples and marks, which contribute to creating an effect of emotional tension.
