Virgin And Child
This work follows the models of the Italian painter Guido Reni circa 1620-1625, preserved at the Galerie Doria Pamphilj. It was also copied by Valencian painter Mariano Salvador Maella in 1761 at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
In this 18th-century version, she not only features the feigned oval, but is also surrounded by ornamentation with foliage and plant elements that configure the work's rectangular format.
The Virgin, with her gentle face, observes the sleeping Child. It features a few variations, such as the position of the Virgin's hands, which, in this version, are crossed over her shoulders, as well as the Child's right arm, which falls back.
The Virgin's hands are crossed over her shoulders.
