An Important Art Nouveau Silver Dressing Mirror By Orivit Ag, Cologne No. 93
AN IMPORTANT ART NOUVEAU SILVER AND AMETHYST-MOUNTED DRESSING MIRROR
ORIVIT AG, COLOGNE (GERMANY), CIRCA 1903–1904
Model No. 93
An exceptional and rare Art Nouveau dressing mirror in sterling silver, representing one of the most refined and ambitious creations of Orivit AG during its short yet highly innovative period in the early 20th century.
The composition is conceived in a balanced architectural structure, executed in 925 silver and enriched with finely integrated amethyst cabochons. The design combines flowing organic forms with a disciplined geometric framework, characteristic of the advanced phase of German Jugendstil.
The use of amethyst—reserved for only a very limited number of Orivit silver models—places this piece within an elite and particularly rare subset of the firm’s production. Comparable works are scarcely encountered and are often known only through rare period catalogues or isolated museum holdings.
This mirror belongs to a small group of high-status toilette objects, likely conceived as part of a coherent luxury ensemble intended for an affluent and internationally oriented clientele. Objects of this calibre were not purely functional, but also served as prestigious presentation pieces or exhibition works.
The crisp modelling and precise integration of gemstone elements reflect Orivit’s mastery in combining advanced industrial production techniques with a highly artistic design approach.
