Head of the Athena of Poitiers
Circa 1950
Plaster
H. 33 cm (with base 48 cm)
The Athena, or Minerva, of Poitiers is a marble statue in the Archaic style, dating from the 5th to 4th centuries B.C. It was discovered in Poitiers in 1901 and is currently housed in the Musée Sainte-Croix in Poitiers. The Louvre holds a plaster cast of the original, and one thinks that the casting workshop of the Louvre probablt marketed reproductions of the whole statue as well as the head (like the one shown here) until the mid-20th century.
