Hippolyte Léty, Roses In A Glass (circa 1930)
Artist: Hippolyte Léty
HIPPOLYTE LÉTY (Vienne en Isère, 1878-1959)
Roses in a glass
Vers 1920
Oil on panel
33 x 41 cm
Signed lower right: H Lety
Hippolyte Léty, from the ancient town of Vienne situated 35 km south of Lyon on theriver Rhône, went to art school in Lyon where he studied under Tony Zac andAlexandre François Bonnardel, before moving to the School of Fine Arts in Paris where he was taught by Léon Bonnat, Ferdinand Humbert et Luc-Olivier Merson. He began exhibiting at the Salons in Lyon and in Paris from the mid-1890s. Although Léty was a brilliant painter in many genres rather than specifically a flower specialist, this is a superb still life by someone who really knew what they were doing with flowers. The paint is thinly laid on with subtle impastos, and like all great painters the stems (and the feature of the stems reflecting and refracting in the water through the glass) are as important as the flowers themselves.
