Pair Of Religious Statuettes, Italy 1839
Pair of religious patinated bronze statuettes on red griotte marble bases with gilded bronze mounts
Italy, dated 1839
Pair of patinated bronze statuettes representing two major figures of Christian iconography, resting on beautiful architectural red griotte marble bases adorned with gilded bronzes and engraved gilt plaques. The first figure represents Christ the Good Shepherd, recognizable by the lamb carried on his shoulders, according to a very ancient iconography of Christian art symbolizing divine mercy, the protection of the faithful, and the salvation of the soul. The inscription “Optimo Pastori” (“To the Excellent Shepherd”) engraved on the base confirms this identification.
The second statuette probably represents a saint deacon, most likely Saint Lawrence — or Saint Stephen — depicted as a young man, dressed in the liturgical dalmatic, holding a book referring to the Gospel as well as an attribute of martyrdom. This iconography refers to the protective saints of the early Church, models of faith and sacrifice.
The bases are particularly remarkable: made of red griotte marble, they are enriched with gilded bronzes, dedicatory plaques engraved in Italian and Latin, and the emblem of the flaming Sacred Heart. One notably reads: “Optimo Pastori” “Humillima Sacratissimi Cordis Jesu Associatio”, as well as a dedication dated December 26, 1839, most likely indicating a religious tribute offered within the context of an Italian pious confraternity dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
These elements make it possible to associate the ensemble with a commission intended for an ecclesiastical institution, a congregation, or a devout association, in a context of religious celebration, honorary donation, or commemorative remembrance.
At once devotional sculptures, commemorative objects, and quality decorative elements, these statuettes reflect the Romantic taste for monumental piety and sacred symbolism.
Very good overall condition, with beautiful old patina.
