From the outset, there have been two official editions of the Lounge Chair: an American version and a European one. The first has been manufactured byHerman Millerfrom 1956 to the present day. The second was produced byMobilier Internationalunder license from Herman Miller, and later byVitra. The shape of the bases distinguishes them, along with a few manufacturing details.
Derived from a prototype presented at the “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” competition at theMuseum of Modern Artin 1940, the Lounge Chair was designed and produced in 1956 for the birthday of film directorBilly Wilder.
