A sublime and large oil on canvas by Charles Marie Peccatte depicting a shepherdess and her goats at the edge of a valley, signed lower right and marked on the back "Sous les tilleuls, Creuse" (Under the Linden Trees, Creuse). The painting measures 60x73cm (excluding the frame) and 71x84cm (including the frame). The work is in perfect original condition. I am offering it for €1320 in its original gilt frame (in fair condition) or €1490 in a beautiful modern carved gilt frame, your choice. The work is guaranteed authentic. This is a new work by Charles Marie Peccatte; my regular clients know my fondness for this painter. I also have another work by him still for sale, which you can see in another listing. This time it's a large canvas depicting a goatherd and her goats under a tree at the edge of a valley. According to the title on the back, it would appear to be the Creuse Valley, which is quite possible, as I recently sold a very similar work, apparently painted in the same location, also in the Creuse Valley (see last photo). Peccatte also painted similar subjects in the Domrémy Valley in Lorraine. As is his custom, Peccatte employs his characteristic, rather pointillist style, as well as his vibrant and colorful palette where violets mingle with yellows, pinks, soft greens, blues, grays, and so on. A major work by this excellent painter who belonged to the two great schools of art: the Nancy School and the Crozant School. Charles Peccatte was a painter born in Baccarat (Meurthe) on February 21, 1870, and died in Saint-Dié on March 3, 1962. A painter associated with the Nancy School, he also features prominently in the Crozant School (see C. Rameix's book dedicated to this school). His work consists primarily of a series of landscapes painted in oils—with brush or palette knife—little influenced by the major movements of his time, such as Fauvism, Cubism, or Surrealism. He can arguably be linked to Post-Impressionism. This artist was born on February 21, 1870 (not February 10). He came from an old Vosges family with several lawyers, but his own father was a merchant in Baccarat. He spent his childhood between his hometown and Saint-Dié, where his family owned a house. It was there that he continued his schooling at Beau Jardin and the local college, before attending the Institution du Bon Père Fourier in Lunéville, and then preparing for the baccalaureate at Malgrange. At the age of 17, he exhibited a painting of the banks of the Meurthe River at the first Saint-Dié Salon and affirmed his artistic vocation by refusing to undertake the law studies his family had intended for him. The following year, in 1888, he presented three canvases at the Nancy Salon. His mother, now a widow, moved to Paris, and he frequented the Louvre and entered the Académie Colarossi in 1890. He continued to paint in the provinces, in Billancourt, Chaville, Brittany, and the Vendée region. Admiring Sisley, Pissarro, Cross, Seurat, and Detroy in particular, he readily drew inspiration from their works, and it was undoubtedly in this way that in 1895 he painted "A Morning in the Creuse" in Crozant. He produced several works there, including a mill by Genetin (which I sold a few years ago), a work extremely close to that of Léon Detroy, whom he inevitably met in the Creuse given the resemblance: same framing, same brushstrokes, at the same time. As for Morning in the Vosges, the work was included in the Golden Book of Lorraine, presented to Admiral Avellan during the celebrations of Franco-Russian friendship in 1893. Two works (Côtes de Vendée and Les v'la qu'arrivote) were accepted at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1899. But his reputation truly took off from 1901 onwards, notably at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, the Salon d'Automne, founded by the Belgian architect and art collector Frantz Jourdain, and in Nancy. Public and private collectors showed interest, and his works traveled the world for exhibitions in London, Montreal, Turin, and Rome. In Saint-Dié, the painter also became involved in public life and was elected to the Municipal Council. He was active in the local learned society, the Vosges Philomatic Society, becoming a member of its committee in 1907, its vice-president from 1924 to 1949, and then honorary president in 1959. Deeply involved in the development of cultural activities in Saint-Dié, Charles Peccatte became the curator of the museum there in 1910 and remained so until his death in 1962. From 1906 onwards, he was drawn to sunny destinations such as Italy, Provence, and the French Riviera, where he made numerous trips. In 1910, he was appointed secretary of the painting jury for the Salon d'Automne in Paris. However, Peccatte remained closely connected to the artists of the Nancy School and, from 1930 onwards, he concentrated most of his activities in the Vosges Mountains. In Saint-Dié, the painter became involved
