Portrait Of A Count And High-ranking Official, Italy, 18th Century
Portrait of an Earl and High Official, almost certainly active in Northern Italy or in a European court in the Franco-Imperial area towards the mid-1700s
The simultaneous presence of the imperial eagle, the crest with a figure with a book and the French lilies in a "partite" coat of arms is very prestigious and indicates a character of very high diplomacy or noble level (probably a jurist).
The combination of the coat of arms and the sumptuous red toga with gold embroidery suggests that the man was not only a noble by blood, but also a high-ranking magistrate or senator. In the 18th century, red was the color of the judiciary and legislative powers (very common for senators from Venice, Turin, or Milan).
