George Hyde Pownall (1876-1932) was a painter and musician.
He was a member of the Westminster Cathedral Choir and also a pianist for the vaudeville theater. In the early 20th century, he emigrated to Australia, where he nurtured his passion for painting.
His artistic sensibility naturally led him to admire the Impressionist school, from which he retained the best to create works with an unmistakable atmosphere.
In his time, the artist was compared to the most illustrious of his elders, such as John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893) or James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903).
Imagine the musician escaping from his choir to set up his easel on the banks of the Thames a stone's throw from the Palace of Westminster. With his mind still imbued with melodies, the painter then composes harmonious, exquisitely gentle works for the pleasure of the senses.
George Hyde Pownall's works are highly sought-after by collectors.
