Scriban Desk In Rosewood, Napoleon III Period - 2nd Half 19th Century

This Napoleon III-period scriban desk, crafted in rosewood and adorned with a rich floral marquetry, presents itself as a prestigious piece of furniture combining decorative virtuosity and architectural elegance. It is organized in two harmonious parts, the upper part forming a display case topped by a gendarme-cap cornice, enlivened by two moving glass doors framed by gilded bronze baguettes. The entrances and key, finely chased with scrolls and volutes, operate a functional lock. The interior reveals two rack-mounted shelves, whose edges are delicately inlaid with light-colored wood, adding a luminous note to the ensemble. Beneath this are two drawers whose fronts, inlaid with garlands of flowers on a butterfly-wing veneered rosewood base, testify to a particularly refined attention to detail.
The lower part comprises a sloping desk with a curved front, featuring a flap sumptuously inlaid with volutes, florets and arabesques. The finely-worked handle and key control a lock in perfect working order. When opened, the curved flap reveals new black leather, edged with a gilded vignette and adorned with a central arabesque motif. The interior offers a structured and ingenious storage space, consisting of a niche, three drawers and two secret compartments fitted with sliding lids, recalling the craftsmanship and ingenuity of 19thᵉ century cabinetmakers. The piece rests on curved legs in the Louis XV taste, enhanced by bronze falls and finished with matching sabots, emphasizing the desk's elegant, dynamic silhouette.
A refined and harmonious piece, this scriban desk brilliantly brings together the fine craftsmanship of the XIXᵉ century and the timeless charm of a piece of furniture designed to combine beauty, functionality and prestige.
