1944 Russian Classical Summer Landscape Oil Study Riverside Church Signed Framed

Artist: Nikolay Petrovich Krymov
This intimate yet surprisingly monumental work, painted in oil on millboard in 1944, is attributed to the prominent master of Russian landscape, Nikolai Krymov (1884 - 1958). A classic Central Russian motif unfolds before the viewer: the serene expanse of a river, green banks with squat log cabins, a soaring white-stone church and an endless sky with expressive cumulus clouds. Krymov had a particular passion for painting water and its reflections, capturing moments where the world seems to double, the sky merges with the earth and unexpected spatial breakthroughs emerge. Nature in his paintings appears frozen in time; whatever natural states the artist depicts, his own poetic and contemplative perception prevails. The artist virtuosically uses dense, textured brushwork and a complex, restrained tonal palette to convey a sense of boundless space, fresh air and that solemn quiet inherent in Russian nature. Full of genuine vitality and deep lyricism, this moving painting will make a true centrepiece for any serious collection of European and Russian art.
