On the reverse, a handwritten note in pen: "C Porta - Roma, Vicolo San Nicola Tolentino". Roman aristocratic provenance, artists' studio district of Piazza Barberini, mid-19ᵉ. The model wears the emblematic costume of the Ciociaria, (mountainous region south of Lazio), pleated white linen headdress, gold creole, salmon pink bodice and embroidered collar. A classic iconography of the "Italian belle" as she inspired Francesco HAYEZ, Giovanni FATTORI, Luigi BECHI and Giorgio DE CHIRICO. The workmanship of the face - glazed modelling, frank gaze, free impasto on the headdress - indicates a hand trained at the Roman academies.
