Maurice Lévis, Trip To India "bords Du Gange"
Maurice Lévis, voyage en Inde. Oil on panel "Bords du Gange" signed and titled lower right Maurice Lévis Bords du Gange. 24 x 15.6 cm. French school.
Maurice Lévis (1860-1941) made a long journey to India, just before the First World War. He visited the great cities along the Ganges River.
Our painting "Bords du Gange" bears witness to the artist's passage through cities such as Benares, Agra, Delhi and Jaipur (to be compared with an oil on canvas "Benares, India" passed on March 25, 2021 under the hammer of Great Western Auctions Glasgow, UK, lot N° 878).
It should be noted that the painter traveled with his Matériel d'Artistes as the advertising stamp of Maison Sennelier 3 quai Voltaire in Paris tells us. This was to enable him to paint in situ and thus capture the immediacy of light and color under the best conditions.
Indian scenes are particularly sought after by collectors.
Period wood and gilded stucco frame. A small horizontal mark at the top of the panel. There is some shrinkage of the paint layer in the purple tones to the right of the tower in the foliage, evidence of Maurice Lévis's alla prima work when he painted quickly on the motif. Good overall condition.
2500 euros.
