This splendid pair of paintings, executed with exceptional attention to detail, superbly highlights the unparalleled artistic skills of the famous landscape masters of the Flemish school.
Among the large group of these great artists, the BRUEGHELs—a family of Belgian artists—stood out for their exceptional skill and vivid imagination. They perfectly interpreted this particular style of painting, becoming the pioneers of an artistic expression that enjoyed enormous success in the 17th century and continued to evolve in the centuries that followed.
The simple and spontaneous joy of life of the peasants is depicted in a fairy-tale-like and sometimes grotesque manner through the use of bold colors, typical of Flemish Baroque, as can be seen in the pair of landscapes presented here.
The paintings in question particularly reflect the work of Jan Brueghel II the Younger (Brussels 1601–Antwerp 1678), son of Jan Brueghel the Elder and father of Abraham Brueghel, who distinguished himself for his lavish still lifes.
Trained by his father, and following a trip to Italy that took him to Rome and Naples, Jan returned to Antwerp in 1625. There he established and became the director of a renowned and flourishing workshop, working for numerous prestigious patrons, including the court of Paris.
The artist behind these paintings is an excellent painter who worked closely with the Master, as evidenced by the stylistic perfection, exceptional color palette, and inimitable imagination in the depiction of the landscape.
The canvases published here, which are notably larger in scale than the more common paintings on panel and copper, constitute an important example of his workshop’s artistic output.
It should be noted that paintings on canvas by Jan Brueghel and his collaborators are very rare and are found only in large-scale landscapes.
The two works make a striking impression on the wall and are ideal for decorating a grand salon, arousing interest and curiosity among guests.
The condition is excellent, and the significant original frames, lacquered with gilded profiles, perfectly complement the paintings.
