Sicilian Cart Signed By Leonardo Ferro And Calvino Domenico – Trapani, 20th Century

This example is particularly noteworthy as it is signed by both the carver, Leonardo Ferro (Trapani), and the painter-decorator, Calvino Domenico, a painter in Trapani. These signatures are clearly legible on the painted panels, attesting to their authenticity and the traceability of skilled craftsmanship.

The Sicilian cart is one of the most iconic symbols of the island's culture, renowned for its rich decorations and vibrant colors, an expression of a popular tradition of great historical and artistic value.

Entirely handcrafted, it features a finely carved wooden frame decorated with traditional polychrome motifs.

The painted panels depict lively narrative scenes of historical and chivalric inspiration, including episodes such as Caesar's landing in the British Isles and the death of Julian the Apostate, depicted with great dynamism and rich color, in keeping with the typical taste of Sicilian carts.
