Chest, Trunk, Leather-covered With Metal Inlays. 17th Century, 45x26x19
The object shown in the image is an antique chest or casket made of wood covered in leather and decorated with brass studs.
These types of containers, often also referred to as caskets or portable treasure chests, were used to store important documents, valuables, or as small travel trunks.
Materials: Internal structure in wood (fir) with an outer covering of dark leather secured by a dense series of metal studs. The perimeter of the lid and base is adorned with rows of brass or iron studs, which served both to reinforce the structure and for aesthetic purposes.
It features a central top handle in iron or brass for carrying and a front mortise lock, typical of antique artisanal production.
The chest is intact in all its parts, missing the key.
Dated to the late 17th to early 18th century, of Italian origin.
