Artist biography

Diving into the world of art is a journey full of surprises, and Charles van den Eycken is certainly one of those fascinating discoveries. This Belgian painter, who lived from 1859 to 1923, was passionate about depicting interiors and animals, particularly dogs and cats. His works are distinguished by the richness of their detail and the striking interplay of light and shadow, which brings the scene to life and captivates the viewer. Van den Eycken came from a family of artists whose artistic talent had been passed down from generation to generation. His grandfather, Frans, was a renowned decorative painter, and his father, also named Charles, was renowned for his realistic landscapes. He began his training with his father and continued at the prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, then at the Académie de Louvain, where he studied under the tutelage of Joseph Stevens, a realistic animal painter.

The beauty and authenticity of van den Eycken's paintings attracted the attention of art lovers the world over, including Queen Marie-Henriette of Belgium, for whom he produced several works. His paintings were exhibited at major salons in Brussels, Liège, Ghent and Antwerp, as well as in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. He was also a prominent member of the "L'Essor" group of artists, and his talent was recognized by numerous medals. Charles van den Eycken possessed a particular gift for depicting animals in various activities, giving his works both humor and emotion. His talent for capturing the vibrant energy and personality of dogs and cats helped make him one of the greatest animal painters of his time.
