Solid Silver Sundial/compass By Butterfield - Paris, France - Early 18th Century
Exceptional folding solar compass known as the "Butterfield", attributed to Michael Butterfield, a famous maker of scientific instruments active in Paris in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
This refined piece is crafted in finely engraved solid silver, featuring an octagonal dial adorned with Roman numerals, a compass rose and delicately chased hour scales. The elegant engraving style is typical of Parisian production of this period.
The instrument is equipped with its original folding gnomon, richly openworked and decorated, enabling use as a sundial. The integrated compass, with its still-functional needle, is protected by period glass. The set is completed by a matching lid, also in silver, finely decorated with floral motifs.
The object is preserved in its original sheathed and fitted box, which is particularly rare. The interior still features its antique trim.
We note the presence of visible hallmarks/stamps, attesting to the quality of the metal and contributing to the authentication of the piece.
Condition: exceptional for an object over 300 years old, with a very beautiful patina of age. The whole is remarkably well preserved, both in terms of the mechanism and the overall aesthetics.
