Academic Drawing, Bust Of Emperor Caracalla In Profile, 19th Century
Charming academic pencil drawing on framed paper depicting the bust of the Roman Emperor Caracalla in profile after Antiquity.
Signed lower right A. Fruze (?).
Beautiful antique burr (walnut?) and dark wood frame.
French work of the late 19th-early 20th century.
Dimensions of the drawing alone: 47x37.5 cm.
Dimensions of the frame: 59.8x49.7 cm.
The bust of Caracalla in the Vatican Museum is one of the most famous portraits of an emperor in antiquity. The original was created following the assassination of Geta in 212 AD.
It was a major source of inspiration from the Renaissance onwards, and was frequently studied as part of artistic training, notably at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, which owned a copy. This academic drawing could be one of these studies, but it could also be a piece drawing by an artist who made the trip to Rome.
