Italian Circular Marquetry Table – Myth of Phaethon, Italy, Late 18th Century

Description:
This Italian circular table, crafted in the late 18th century, is a masterpiece of marquetry depicting the myth of Phaethon, son of Helios. The top features a large mythological scene capturing the dramatic moment when Phaethon, having lost control of the solar chariot, plunges into the Eridanus River. This decoration, framed by a border of vases and garlands, draws directly from Ovid’s Metamorphoses and reflects the era’s fascination with classical narratives, reinterpreted with meticulous attention to detail and storytelling.

The apron, opening to two discreet drawers, rests on fluted legs, characteristic of the Italian neoclassical style emerging during this period. Minor restorations, carried out with respect for the original work, preserve the authenticity and timeless beauty of this piece.

Origin and Inspiration:
This table is rooted in the Italian tradition of marquetry, where the art of storytelling through wood reached its peak. In the late 18th century, Italian craftsmen, influenced by archaeological discoveries and a return to antiquity, incorporated mythological scenes into their creations, blending technical skill with cultural symbolism. This piece may have been created in a Tuscan or Roman workshop, where marquetry was particularly prized for its elegance and precision.
