Pair Of Sconces 1st Empire Style (1804 - 1815). 19th Century.

Pair of 1st Empire style sconces in gilt bronze and brown patina with four arms of light. The sheath-shaped shaft depicts a winged woman resting on a globe and holding the light branches with her arms placed along the body. Ornamented with lion heads, mascarons, griffins and laurel leaves.

Very fine matte mercury gilding burnished to the original agate. The sconces have not been pierced for electricity in order to respect their period integrity.

A similar model is preserved at the Château de Rambouillet (previously presented at the Petit and Grand Trianons in Versailles, see in the book Marie-France Dupuy-Baylet, L'Heure Le Feu La Lumière - Les Bronzes du Mobilier National 1800 - 1870, Édition Faton, 2010, p. 60 ill.
