This work embodies to perfection the virtuoso sculpting technique of Antonio Tantardini who, in a country renowned for its talented marble sculptors, was among the greatest masters of this art. Vicario describes Tantardini's talent as "une abilità tecnica stupefacente" ("stupefying technical skill").
Trained by Pompeo Marchesi at Milan's Accademia di Brera, Antonio Tantardini is famous for embodying verismo in Italian sculpture. His works La leggitrice and La schiava, which combine realism and romanticism, demonstrate an affinity with the work of Lorenzo Bartolini, of whom Tantardini was a disciple. He sculpted several important monuments, including the Cavour Monument in Milan, the Arnold Statue in Brescia and the Independence Monument in Vienna.
He was also a great sculptor.
