*************

Exceptional wide-winged forged pewter PLAT known as "à la cardinal".
Unpublished hallmark of Guiot MELOT received master in Semur circa 1650: melon / GVIOT MELOT.
Diameter: 31.9 cm
SEMUR-EN-AUXOIS, Mid 17th c.

In very nice condition showing beautiful hammering facets on the reverse.
The purpose of this technique was to compress the metal's molecules to increase its rigidity.
The only example of this type of object found to date for this center. His unpublished hallmark was located and dated thanks to a search on the Généanet website, which revealed that he was the son of Jean, himself a pewter potter, and that he married in 1656. Several members of the MELOT family were master pewter potters in Semur: Jean I, Guiot, jean II, Hugues and François, active from the early 17th century to the first half of the 19th century.
Note that the symbol chosen by a master to appear on his hallmark often bore a phonetic resemblance to his name: here melon and Melot.
Finally, the name "à la cardinal" alludes to the introduction of this shape in France by Cardinal Mazarin, who was originally from Italy; it also fortuitously resembles the wide-brimmed hats of some clergymen of the time.

Bibliography: "La poterie d'étain en Bourgogne" by Roger Verdier and Daniel Allix, who do not cite this unpublished master
