Jean Baptiste Caudot (Nancy 1682 – Nancy 1757) – Arcadian Landscape with Resting Figures.
54.5 x 73.5 cm (without frame) - 73.5 x 92.5 cm (with frame).
Oil on canvas, in carved and gilded wooden frame.
The composition depicts an intense pitched battle dominated by a violent explosion in the center, from which a reddish light radiates, bathing the surrounding soldiers. In the foreground, figures in eighteenth-century uniforms, some fallen, others fleeing, animate the scene with narrative force. On the right, an officer in parade dress coordinates the troops amidst the chaos. The sky, billowing with clouds of smoke, closes the scene with dark tones that enhance the contrast with the central glow.
