Gregorio Lazzarini (Venice 1655 - Villabona Veronese 1730) - Rebecca and Eliezer at the Well.

Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
Expert opinion: Prof. Ugo Ruggeri, Venice (critical essay enclosed).
Gregorio Lazzarini was born in Venice in 1655 and trained in the workshop of Francesco Rosa, quickly absorbing the classicist tradition that would define his entire output. Active between Venice and the leading courts of northern Italy, he enjoyed considerable prestige during his lifetime: he was a highly regarded painter among the Venetian patriciate and a formative influence on the next generation, most notably as the master of the young Giambattista Tiepolo.
His style is characterised by a classicism of restrained elegance, close in spirit to the Bolognese Carlo Cignani, with particular attention to the construction of heads and the rendering of drapery. His compositions are always solid and measured, far from the excesses of the late Baroque; his luminous, refined palette anticipates the chromatic solutions that Jacopo Amigoni would develop in the following decade.
The canvas depicts the biblical episode from Genesis (24, 15–22): Rebecca offers water to the elderly Eliezer, Abraham's servant, who has come in search of a bride for Isaac; camels and attendants complete the Oriental setting in the background. The composition, dominated by the chromatic contrast between Rebecca's pink-purple dress and the dark tones of the male figures, reflects the artist's full maturity, datable to around 1700. Comparisons with the Orpheus and the Bacchantes at Cà Rezzonico, the Angelica and Medoro at the Neues Palais in Potsdam, and the Judgment of Paris at the Museo Civico in Vicenza confirm the attribution to Lazzarini with certainty. The work is an important unpublished addition to the artist's catalogue, remarkable for the freshness of the pictorial execution and the elegant solidity of the composition.
Condition report: Relined canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface; traces of old restorations and wear are present.
