The model is shown at mid-body, dressed in an elegant red velvet suit with covered buttons, embellished with fine ruffle lace. The powdered wig and confident attitude convey the character's high social rank, probably a member of the bourgeoisie or nobility.
Beautiful execution in the rendering of materials, particularly velvet and skin tones.
As the painting is unsigned, it can be attributed to a painter in the circle of the French painter Louis Tocqué.
Louis Tocqué (1696-1772) was an 18th-century French portrait painter active during the reign of Louis XV. A pupil of Jean-Marc Nattier, he quickly established himself as one of the most sought-after portraitists of his time.
Received at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1734, he distinguished himself by his fine rendering of fabrics and his particular attention to the psychology of his models. He painted numerous figures from French high society, as well as members of the royal family.
His fame extended beyond France's borders: he was called upon to work abroad, notably at the court of Frederick V of Denmark and in Russia with Elisabeth I of Russia.
Louis Tocqué epitomized the Enlightenment's portrait d'apparat, combining elegance, precision and social prestige.
