According to the Encyclopédie méthodique, "L'Art du parfumeur", sponges and roots soaked in specially prepared waters or powders were used to clean teeth. Tooth powders were made from powdered absorbent earth and scented with aromatics. They were used with a small wet root. These roots were of various origins: fibrous and woody roots in the shape of brushes, alfalfa roots, grumaux... Using a penknife, they were shaped like brushes. Liquorice root was also used.
These very rare boxes are generally made of precious metal, and feature in the description of 18th-century and early 19th-century toilettes.
