He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon at age 15, before moving to Paris in 1899. At the academy Carrière he meets: Matisse, Derain, Puy, Laprade. He paints on the banks of the Seine in the open air.In 1901, affected by the serious wine crisis affecting the Midi, his parents can no longer support him.
