So, this is a very rare porcelain vase from GDA Limoges with a superb Art Nouveau floral design, created by Edward Colonna. The decoration is first of all recessed in the ivory-colored paste depicting lotuses, followed by another decoration this time in grand feu depicting foliage and petals in almond green and old rose tones.
There are 3 types of grand feu decorations produced by GDA in Limoges around 1900, the first consisting mainly of vases but also a service by Edward Colonna, the second by Georges De Feure, vases and sculptures of women, and the last by Paul Jouve depicting animals. All were created between 1900 and 1910 and are extremely rare on the market and highly prized by collectors.
Édouard Colonna, born in 1862 in Mülheim (now a district of Cologne), and died in 1948, was a French goldsmith and designer. He was one of the young artists discovered by Siegfried Bing, one of the main promoters of Art Nouveau, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris preserves some of his pieces, characterized by a highly sinuous style. When William Cornelius Van Horne bought the Van Horne house in Montreal in 1889, he hired Colonna to renovate the interior.
Edward Colonna thus created jewelry, furniture and, consequently, shapes and decorations for the GDA manufacture in Limoges.
