Coronation Of The Virgin – Polychrome Bas-relief - 17th Century
Charming carved walnut bas-relief whose iconography glorifies Mary through her coronation by the Trinity.
Mary appears at the center of the composition, her hands clasped in prayer, beneath the dove of the Holy Spirit. She stands on a cloud, surrounded by two kneeling angels.
On either side, Christ, on the right, and God the Father, on the left, crown the Virgin, who thus becomes Queen of Heaven.
The union of the figures thus illustrated conveys divine harmony, while the earthly world is symbolized at the bottom of the panel by a representation of the holy city of Jerusalem, bisected by the Jordan River.
The exquisite quality of the carving is particularly noteworthy, especially the gentle expressions on the faces, the delicate positioning of the hands, and the subtle interplay of drapery that accentuates the fluidity of the figures. This is a composition characterized by serene and refined features, imbued with emotional intensity.
