" Vue De La Fenêtre " Jules Cavaillès ( 1901 - 1977 )
Jean Jules Louis Cavaillès was born in Carmaux on June 20, 1901 into a family of shopkeepers.
He entered the Carmaux Mines as a draftsman from 1919 to 1921. He then decided to devote himself to painting, and in 1921 moved to Paris, where he became friends with painter Roger Limouse (1894-1990), whose studio he shared.
From 1922 to 1925, he studied at the Académie Julian, under Jean-Paul Laurens' two sons, Pierre and Paul-Albert Laurens. During these years, when he was trying to establish his own style, Cavaillès regularly visited the Louvre to draw inspiration from the work of the masters. He also frequented the galleries and salons d'Automne and des Indépendants, where he discovered the most contemporary approaches. He was particularly interested in the work of Braque and Matisse, who revealed to him the chromatic intensity of Fauvism, as well as Bonnard and Renoir, who bequeathed him their lesson in tenderness towards people and things.
In 1936, winning the Blumenthal Foundation Prize helped bring the young artist's work to the attention of the general public. In 1937, he was asked to create a large-scale decoration for the Languedoc pavilion at the Exposition Internationale.
In 1938, he was appointed professor at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs. At this point, he met Raymond Legueult (1898-1971), Roland Oudot (1897-1981) and Maurice Brianchon (1899-1979), his friends and painters in the Réalité Poétique movement.
During the war, he played an active role in the Resistance with his friend Jean Cassou. Upon liberation, he was appointed curator of the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse until he was reinstated as a professor in Paris.
From 1946 until his death, he pursued his personal work in his Paris studio, his property in Tonnerre or his apartment in Cagnes. A painter of atmosphere and happy times, Cavaillès mainly painted landscapes, still lifes and interior scenes with windows open onto the sea or garden.
