Pair Of Rococo Candlesticks After Meissonnier

Pair of rocaille candlesticks in chased and gilded bronze.

The circular base, with its movement-like shape, echoes the canons of the rocaille style with its curves and counter-curves, foliage and lines wrapping around the central shaft.

Characteristic of the rocaille style flirting with rococo, these candlesticks are inspired by the designs of Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750), a French draughtsman, silversmith and ornamentalist considered by his contemporaries to be one of the leaders of the rocaille.
He succeeded Jean II Bérain as architect-draughtsman to the King's Chamber and Cabinet.

French 19th-century work.

Good condition.
