This residence, classified as a national tangible cultural asset "Otaru Kihinkan(Old Aoyama Villa)", was built by Masakichi, second head of the Aoyama of the Aoyama family, who had made a huge fortune from herring fishing.
Matsumi Yaozo was closely associated with the movement printmaking movement in northern Japan. Born in Hakodate,Hokkaido, he participated in numerous group exhibitions,notably at the Japan Print Association and Dōten exhibitions, and laterworked in association with the Hokkaido Shimbunsha printing studio and the studio of the Kyoto publisher Chikuhōdō.
