History:
Emile Gallé was the founder and first president of L'école de Nancy in 1901.
A child of art and commerce, he was one of the most prominent figures in the applied arts of
his era and one of the pioneers of L'art Nouveau.
He was also a precursor in the field of genetics and evolution in the plant world, and his work, little known to the general public, is nonetheless of great relevance, since it
precedes those of Gregor Mendel and foreshadows the main lines.
On the door of his Nancy studio, we could read this motto: Ma racine est au fond des bois" (My root is deep in the woods).
