Old inscription “Giacomino” on the front and reverse, with number 15.
Provenance: from a noted Florentine collection, assembled by a collector focused on Tuscan painting from the late 19th to early 20th century, with particular interest in Hollaender and the Macchiaioli.
The number 15, together with the handwriting of the inscriptions, corresponds to other works from the same group and likely relates to an earlier collection inventory.
Elongated face, fine beard, steady gaze. The handling is quick and economical, with few strokes establishing the figure.
Alfonso Hollaender (Regensburg 1845 – Florence 1923), trained in Berlin, moved to Florence in 1870. A German painter who became Florentine, he worked within the local milieu in dialogue with the legacy of the Macchiaioli, sharing their interest in painting from life and rapid execution, while maintaining a realist approach.
He painted landscapes, seascapes, scenes of daily life, church interiors and small figure studies. His frequent use of small wooden panels supports a direct, swift execution.
The date 1878 places the work in his early Florentine years.
