Very large terracotta bather, circa 1920, signed Max Blondat 1872-1926.
Max Blondat, a sculptor emblematic of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.
Max Blondat was born in Crain in 1872, and apprenticed to an ornamentalist sculptor in 1886. In 1889, he began studying art at the Germain Pillon school, and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1890.
In 1892, he entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He worked in all types of materials: wood, stone, glass and bronze.
He created numerous utilitarian pieces (knockers, ashtrays, radiator caps)
He also created ceramics with Edmond Lachenal for the Manufacture de Sèvres, ironwork with Edgard
Brandt and jewelry for Hermès.
In 1906, he was a member and founder of the Societé des Arts Décoratifs. In 1918, he became director of the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Dijon and, from 1919 onwards, designed war memorials. He died in 1925.
