Artist: Théophile Alexandre Steinlen
Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923)
Le cheminot -Etude sur le vif
Ink on paper,
Signed "Steinlen" lower right
Dimensions: 31 x 45 cm
Very fine ink study of a man in profile, a cheminot (or chemineau) wearing a floppy hat.
The character, treated with great economy of means, is rendered with a rapid, nervous stroke, characteristic of Théophile Alexandre Steinlen's work.
The artist captures here an on-the-spot attitude, in a spirit close to some of his sketches of popular figures and street scenes.
The modelling of the face is suggested by fine hatching, while the silhouette remains deliberately sketchy, testifying to a great mastery of drawing.
Mention destinataire : "20 juin, mme Barthelemy, 10 f. (5 à Dresde) ".
Antique paper showing a natural patina and a few traces of humidity, not serious.
Provenance:
- Vente Drouot, étude Guy Loudmer, 1995
A work typical of the artist's graphic work, illustrating his keen sense of observation and expressive line.
Very decorative and sought after by lovers of late 19th-century drawings.
