Limestone carved fragment depicting a bearded male head, most likely a saint from a devotional set.

The face, treated in full volumes, is characterized by a strong expressive intensity: heavy eyelids, lowered gaze, half-open mouth conveying a form of abandonment or inner tension. The beard, worked in thick, irregular masses, frees itself from strictly decorative stylization and reinforces the figure's deeply embodied character.

The ensemble is part of a Haute Époque production inscribed in a still sensitive Gothic vocabulary, but already freed from its most linear conventions in favor of a denser, more inhabited approach. This type of treatment, direct and without artifice, is found in peripheral workshops where the power of evocation takes precedence over idealization.

The surface shows homogeneous ancient erosion and diffuse traces of polychromy, testifying to an original painted state that has now largely disappeared. These vestiges confirm the devotional nature of the object, originally intended for a spiritual context.

Isolated fragment, probably derived from a larger sculpture that has now disappeared, but retaining a strong plastic autonomy. The frontality of the face and the density of the volume give it a particularly striking presence.

General erosion, old missing parts, incomplete fragment. Stable set, coherent surface.
