Relief carved wooden panel depicting a horseman moving through an architectural landscape composed of religious buildings.

The scene is organized around a mounted figure, wearing a bicorne, holding a small book. An umbrella hangs alongside the horse. The animal, treated in a compact, stable manner, is part of a well-balanced horizontal composition. In the background, two buildings structure the space: a steeple topped by a rooster and a chapel topped by a cross.

The ensemble develops a simple but coherent iconography, evoking a rural universe where human presence, religious reference and symbolic organization of the landscape mingle. The rider, more suggested than precisely described, is part of a popular tradition where the figure is worth more for what it embodies than for its formal exactitude.

The sculptural work is straightforward and legible. Volumes are clear, contours sharp, and details treated with deliberate simplification. The absence of perspective and the frontality of the elements clearly anchor the piece in a non-academic language.

Tool marks remain visible in places, testifying to direct work, without any search for illusion. This approach lends the ensemble a strong, almost graphic presence.

Beautiful, warm and nuanced antique patina, highlighting the wood's relief and grain. Traces of use and small old holes visible on the reverse as well as on the surface.
