Tondo - Oil On Panel - Humiliated Christ Carrying The Cross - Stations Of The Cross - Northern Italy
Late XVIIᵉ - Early XVIIIᵉ century
Northern Italy (Lombardy / Piedmont)
Carved wooden circular medallion, formerly polychrome, enclosing an oil on panel depicting a scene from the Passion of Christ.
The composition depicts an episode of derision and humiliation: Christ, kneeling and weakened, is surrounded by three figures with marked, almost theatrical attitudes. One of them intervenes directly at head level, while the others take part in the brutal staging. The whole is part of a popular iconography derived from the Passion cycles, where the emphasis is on suffering and derision rather than a strictly canonical narrative.
The pictorial treatment is characteristic of Northern Italian productions: expressive faces with accentuated features, a vivid palette dominated by reds and greens, a dense, legible composition. The architectural background, summarily sketched, situates the scene in a built-up space while retaining great freedom of interpretation.
The carved wooden frame, with relief decoration, features a vocabulary inherited from the Baroque, treated here in a popular manner. The forms remain simple, with no search for symmetry or sophisticated depth. Remains of polychromy and gilding, now largely worn away, testify to an earlier, richer appearance. The whole forms a coherent whole, frame and painting clearly contemporary.
A typical object of Italian popular devotion, probably intended for domestic use or a small private chapel, where expressive power takes precedence over academic rigor.
