Painter and engraver, Robert Planchet leaves us no trace in the various painting dictionaries... Yet a sociétaire des Artistes Français, he won several Salon prizes including a bronze medal in 1939 and the Anna E. Humblot prize. Secretary of the Shndicat des Graveurs, administrator of a historical and artistic society in Provins in the 1930s, he was even entitled to a biographical exhibition in that town in September 1933.
Planchet's painting is mainly located around Paris and in Seine et Marne, where he has a residence (Mons). Engraving accounts for a large part of his work, which we know mainly from a Parisian series, copies of which can be found on the art market.
Our canvas, painted on the banks of the Dronne, with its freshness and luminosity, is worthy of note. This outsider's view of a subject that isn't academic, as the nearby towns of Brantôme and Bourdeilles might have been, gives an insight into the artist's modus operandi. He prefers unobtrusive subjects to postcard images, and this is true throughout his production.
