Animated Castle Interior . Lesaint.
Artist: Charles Louis Lesaint
Quite characteristic of this excellent artist, superb and luminous
animated chateau interior.
Charles Louis Lesaint, like his Maitre Bouton, specialized
in architectural views, church and cloister interiors, and ruins.
This interest in the heritage of the Middle Ages, together with meticulous craftsmanship
inclined him towards a certain romanticism. His paintings appeared at the Salon from
1819 to 1843. He was awarded a medal in 1822.
He depicted a few landscapes chosen from regions that attracted him
because of their archaeological remains: Normandy ( Jumièges ),
Picardy, the surroundings of Liège, Cologne and Avignon.
Works by our artist can be found in the Musée d' Avranches ( interior
of a cloister ), ( destroyed in the fire at the Hotel de Ville in 1899 )
Montpellier, watercolor.
Our painting is on a small canvas, never faded, in excellent condition.
It bears the signature at the bottom, slightly to the right of center.
Dimensions, 21.5 cm x 16 cm.
Dimensions with its original key frame ( one or two small, faintly visible misses)
35 cm x 29 cm. Small copper plate with engraved inscription "LESAINT".
